How to Vault The Ceiling in Your Ranch Home

“A vaulted ceiling can be a great way to add a touch of luxury and grandeur to your ranch home. Not only does it bring in more light, but it also makes the space seem larger and more inviting,” says Connecticut Real Estate Broker Steve Schappert.  Here is what you need to know about creating an attractive vaulted ceiling for your home:

According to HomeAdvisor, the cost of vaulting a ceiling can range from $16,000 to $24,000, with an average cost of $19,200. The job generally costs $60 per square foot, but this doesn’t include the price of raising a roof. The cost to raise a roof ranges from $15,000 to $125,000.

Materials Needed – The most common materials used to create a vaulted ceiling are drywall or plasterboard. You will need enough material to cover the entire area that you want to vault, plus additional pieces for any areas where seams will meet. Additionally, if you plan on adding beams into the design, you should purchase lumber specifically designed for ceilings as they are lighter and easier to install. You will also need screws or nails, joint compound and a trowel or putty knife.

Installing The Ceiling – Start by measuring the area that you want to vault. Then, cut your drywall or plasterboard according to your measurements. When installing the pieces, be sure to use screws or nails instead of adhesive so they are securely attached to the ceiling frame. Once all of the pieces are in place, fill any gaps with joint compound and let it dry completely before continuing.

Adding Beams – If you decided to add wooden beams for extra support, use a jigsaw or sawzall to cut them into the desired shape and size. Secure each beam using screws and make sure that they are placed evenly across the ceiling for maximum stability. You can use metal brackets if you need extra support for the beams in order to ensure that everything is secure.

Adding texture – If you want to add texture or design to your vaulted ceiling, there are multiple options available. Wood paneling and beadboard are great options for a classic look, while using different colors of paint can give it a more modern feel. For an even more unique touch, consider adding wall stencils or wallpaper with interesting patterns.

Completing the project – After all of the pieces have been securely attached and textured to your desired effect, it’s time to finish off your vaulted ceiling project. Use caulking around the edges and seams of your drywall or plasterboard pieces to ensure a smooth and finished look. If you are using wood paneling, use a sealant or varnish to protect it from moisture and wear-and-tear.

Installing a vaulted ceiling in your ranch home can be an easy way to completely transform the look of your space. With some preparation, creativity, and effort, you can create a stunning and unique feature that will bring warmth and beauty into any room in your home. Whether you choose to go with drywall, plasterboard, or wood paneling the result will be a beautiful and unique addition that’s sure to impress anyone who enters your home. Good luck!
