Formative Influences:

Art’s persona was born on July 4, 1954, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Artisanai Curator embodies a life deeply rooted in Mohawk Indian heritage and a profound commitment to environmental conservation. Growing up on a small ranch in Goshen, Connecticut, Artisanai was raised by his parents, Kateri and Pallaton, both actively engaged in land conservation efforts. The Mohawk, traditionally the keepers of the Eastern Door of the Iroquois Confederacy, passed down a rich legacy that profoundly shaped Artisanai’s worldview.

Kateri, meaning pure, and Pallaton, meaning fighter, not only instilled a sense of cultural pride in Artisanai but also served as exemplary advocates for sustainable living. Long before it became a popular movement, they were interior decorators promoting a lifestyle in harmony with nature. However, their true passion lay in land conservation, dedicating a significant amount of their time to advancing this noble cause.

Pallaton’s commitment to conservation extended beyond advocacy—he imparted his knowledge by teaching classes on Biocultural Diversity & Conservation at Cornell University. This exposure to the intersection of culture and environmental preservation left an indelible mark on Artisanai, influencing his life’s trajectory.

To support his college education in journalism at Western Connecticut State College in Danbury, Artisanai worked as a landscaper. These hands-on experiences in landscaping not only funded his studies but also deepened his connection to the earth. It was during this time that he honed his appreciation for the delicate balance between nature and human existence.

Artisanai’s upbringing, coupled with his education and experiences, forged a strong commitment to environmental stewardship. Today, at 69 years old, he stands as a beacon of wisdom and passion for sustainable living. His journey is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Mohawk people and a reminder that, even before it was fashionable, his family embraced and advocated for a harmonious coexistence with the land. Artisanai Curator continues to carry the torch, contributing to the legacy of the Mohawk and furthering the cause of land conservation for future generations.
